Demystifying the Process: What Actually Happens in Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy?

When most people hear about Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP), they picture the medicine itself. But the medicine is only one part of the journey. True, profound healing doesn’t happen in a vacuum—it happens within a structured, safe, and deeply supportive process.

If you have been battling a severe inner critic, carrying old trauma, or feeling like you are constantly at war with yourself, KAP can be a powerful tool to help you finally find peace. But how does it actually work?

There are three main phases to Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy.

Phase 1: The Preparation Phase We never jump straight into the medicine. The first phase is all about building a foundation of safety and trust. This is where we get to know each other well. I get to know you, understand the root of the problem, and learn your history. Together, we clarify exactly what we are going to be working with when you take the medicine, ensuring you feel completely secure and grounded before we move forward.

Phase 2: The Dosing Phase This is the phase where you come into the office and experience the medicine with me right by your side. These days look a little different from a regular therapy session. The lights are dimmed, curated music is playing, and you are invited to completely relax.

As you take the medicine, you might feel a little floaty or deeply relaxed. This is when something beautiful happens: the “protectors” that we all carry—that heavy armor, that high-functioning anxiety, that inner critic—sort of soften back. By lowering these rigid defenses, you finally get to be with the parts of yourself that need to be seen, heard, and witnessed. Most people find a profound sense of compassion for themselves—especially for the parts that have suffered in the past and have been secretly running the show in the present. It frees something up inside of you, allowing you to choose how you want to be in the world and in your relationships moving forward.

Phase 3: The Integration Phase This is a vital, non-negotiable part of the process. Integration is where you take the profound wisdom, the insights, and the deep knowledge you gained during the dosing phase and actually put it into practice in your daily life.

We work together to come up with a concrete plan that works for you. Without this phase, the insights fade. If you don’t do the integration work, there won’t be lasting change. This is what separates a fleeting experience from true, whole-self healing.
